Song 47: Skylark - Wildflower (off Skylark - 1972)

I come from a musical family. It’s not that we get together and jam EVER (the only parent of mine who played an instrument was my late great stepfather, who played banjo and guitar) BUT we all appreciate music. Music is very important to every single member of my family, and we each define ourselves by our musical tastes.

When I was very very young, my mom and dad divorced. Each parent had a list of songs they’d sing to put my brother and me to sleep - neither knew any children’s songs, so they’d sing old radio staples they loved.

Mom would sing “Baby Day” by Melanie Safka, “American Pie” by Don McLean and “Tennessee Waltz” by Pattie Page. Dad would sing Harry Chapin’s entire discography. They had joint custody of “Bobby McGee.”

The one song that has truly stuck with me, though, is Wildflower

It’s my go-to “I had a REALLY TERRIBLE day” song. It’s my “Someone else had a REALLY TERRIBLE day” song. It’s my “Things could always be worse” song. It’s my “Don’t be afraid to let yourself go” song.
