Song #019: Aimee Allen + Scott Russo - (I’m Not Your) Girlfriend (off I’d Start a Revolution If I Could Get Up In The Morning - 2002)
I happened upon this song about five minutes before writing this post. I had a song stuck in my head, and I couldn’t remember who sang it. I googled the lyrics I could remember and this song came up. I was pretty sure it wasn’t the same song, but I looked (I’m Not Your) Girlfriend up on Youtube and this was SO MUCH BETTER than the original (which was I’m Not Your Lover by Jann Arden).
I love girlpop - that’s not news to anyone who knows me. I love angry girl rock almost as much, and this is pretty angry. So many swear words! Sexually explicit lyrics! Oh my!
I heard this version and the solo Aimee version, and I think I like the duet better. I prefer the idea that they’re each aware that they’re only together for the one night. They’re both having all the fun - it shows the darker, selfish side of sex. Aimee and Scott’s personas are using each other and think they’re on the receiving end. They judge each other for it (I’m sure), and take all they can get anyway. This song is crass. This song is hate sex over a fuzzy late-90s riff. This song says, in almost as many words, “If you weren’t such a good lay I would have moved on by now.”
