Song 023: Sloan - Nothing Lasts Forever Anymore (off Action Pact - 2003)

You knew it would happen eventually. The most influential band in my entire life (I’ve been a fan since prepubescence) finally get a post. They’ll get dozens of others eventually, I’m sure, and I’ll explore their complete discography and which songs mean the most to me and why. I could probably do a theme month of JUST Sloan songs and not run out of things to say. I won’t, however, because Chris Murphy’s ego does not need that boost.

It’s a matter of embarrassing public record that I’ve played with Sloan onstage (and yes, I was 16 at the time, so that explains the creepy mostly-regrettable fangirling). Of the three songs I got to play with the band, Nothing Lasts Forever Anymore was the last (and also the one that I didn’t know ahead of time, not that that makes a difference when you’re too in awe to know what you’re playing). It’s not their best song. It’s not even Murph’s best song off Action Pact (was there a discernible best Chris song off that album?)… but it has special significance to me.

It’s also been stuck in my had since yesterday, along with Video Phone and the Glee remake of Physical, for some reason. Usually the songs I have lodged in my mind are ones that reflect what I’m going through (yeah, yeah… go back and find out how I’ve felt every day for the past three weeks. I’ll wait…) but I don’t think I’m in a Nothing Lasts Forever Anymore-style breakup… I’m not in ANY kind of breakup…

Hey, did y’all know it was written about La Feist? Yeah, she’s easy on the ears and the eyes… and got a lot of love from the guys, apparently! Good for her. While it would be in bad taste to speculate further, it’s not difficult to piece together the breakup details from the autobiographical songs on AP and her album Let It Die.

Bottom line: I love Sloan. They rank number one of all time hands down. I’ve seen them perform 40+ times. Obsessive? It’s funny you say that…
