Song #32: France Gall - Laisse tomber les filles (off Poupée de Son)
Ahhh Yéyé - one of my favourite musical eras ever. French girlpop from the swingin’ ’60s. This song in particular I love. There’s a kickass modern English translation called “Chick Habit” that I also love (thanks Maddie!)
I have to go meet up with a friend of mine, but I’ll continue French Week when I get home!)
Edit: Okay. Back. This song is amazing and is a constant recurring Very Appropriate Song. While the English version is fun and violent, this seems like more of a “No, seriously dude. You should know better than to womanize.”
As opposed to a bloody end in a hospital, France swears that one day a girl will make him cry. This could very well be. This is like a better, less obvious precursor to Lily Allen’s Smile.
She’d experienced half of the 100,000,000 ways to break a heart, and been the cause of another large fraction. She thought she knew when to get emotionally invested and what to expect. She thought it was very clear from his reputation that this would never get serious. She acted like she’d never done this before - if only he knew.
He feigned hesitation, but she was quick to reply, “this is hardly a first date.” He was unbelievably tender. He slept with his arm around her and offered her breakfast afterwards. Still, she knew to keep her guard up. Just that once…
He called her a few days later, and she ignored him. He was persistent. She agreed to see him again, and the same thing happened again. She woke up in his arms, and reminded herself to maintain control of the situation. Three more times they met, and always neither of them discussed it turning into anything more.
He didn’t call. She wasn’t sure what to do. She found that, for all her flashing lights and guarded emotions, she missed him.
