Song #34: Anik Jean - La Haine (off La Haine EP)
So there was a bit of a break between the last post and this one, so this is unfortunately the end of French week. That’s okay, because I have a very special dedication post for tomorrow. Today’s artist, Anik Jean, is Quebecoise and usually a rocker chick. The version of her song “La Haine” that I chose is a remix, so it’s a little dancier than the original. I think we all know that I love a good dance song. I’m pretty sure I bought this song off of iTunes after hearing it on Last.fm radio’s “Similar to Marie-Mai” channel, but Anik Jean was also featured in the very same issue of Rebelle magazine that got me into Marie-Mai in the first place. Obviously there’s some comparison, but that’s not the only reason I enjoy this song.
There’s something completely badass and creepy about it. The lyrics ooze of alcohol and anger, but the vocals are smooth and calm. She’s in complete control and is CHOOSING to get her revenge. This is pure spite that would chill your soul.
